What Cancer-Promoting Inflammation Looks Like (and How to Address It)

Inflammation is a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a powerful defense mechanism—your body’s way of healing wounds, fighting infections, and even destroying early cancer cells. But on the other hand, when inflammation sticks around for too long or spreads throughout the body, it starts working against you. Chronic inflammation can suppress your immune system, damage healthy cells, and create the perfect environment for cancer to grow and thrive.

This is especially important after cancer treatment. Chemotherapy and radiation are designed to kill cancer cells, and they do that, in part, by triggering massive inflammation. In the short term, this is necessary—it helps destroy cancerous cells and keep them from spreading. But once treatment is over, lingering inflammation can slow healing, worsen side effects, and even contribute to cancerous changes in healthy cells.

The faster you can bring down that inflammation, the better. Not only does it help reduce fatigue, pain, and other lingering effects of treatment, but it also plays a key role in keeping cancer stem cells dormant. These are the cells that have the potential to reawaken and fuel new cancer growth—but by lowering inflammation, you can help keep them in a state of senescence (or sleep), reducing the risk of recurrence.

This is why understanding inflammation—and more importantly, knowing how to measure and manage it—is key to taking control of your health after cancer. In this post, we’re diving into exactly what cancer-promoting inflammation looks like, how to tell if it’s happening in your body, and what you can do to lower it. Let’s get into it.

How Inflammation Fuels Cancer

Cancer doesn’t develop overnight. It happens as a result of multiple “hits” to our cells—damage that accumulates over time and turns on cancer-promoting processes or turns off cancer-protective ones. One of the biggest culprits behind these hits? Chronic inflammation.

If we work on reducing inflammation and improving our body’s ability to heal, we can reduce those hits, making it harder for cancer to start or grow.

While inflammation plays a key role in fighting cancer cells during treatment, after treatment, we need to focus on healing that inflammation to truly move forward.

What Does Cancer-Promoting Inflammation Look Like?

After treatment, chronic inflammation can manifest in different ways:

  • Fatigue and slow healing –Your body is using all its resources to recover from inflammation, leaving little energy for mental clarity, physical stamina, or healthy skin, hair, and nails.

  • Ongoing gut issues –Diarrhea, bloating, constipation, heartburn, or gas.

  • Inflammatory and autoimmune conditions –Conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and irritable bowel disease thrive in an inflammatory environment.

  • Excess weight or difficulty losing weight–Chronic inflammation can interfere with metabolism and insulin function.

  • No noticeable symptoms–Sometimes, the body adapts so well that there are no obvious signs, making regular testing essential.

How Can We Measure Inflammation?

The good news? We can measure and track inflammation through blood work. Some key markers include:

  • Chronically low or high white blood cell count –Signaling immune system dysfunction.

  • Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)– Indicators of systemic inflammation.

  • Low or suboptimal vitamin D levels –Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune function and inflammation control.

  • High blood sugar and insulin levels –Excess sugar in the bloodstream contributes to inflammatory damage.

  • Identifying and monitoring symptom frequency and severity


What Can You Do to Reduce Cancer-Promoting Inflammation?

Healing inflammation requires a whole-body approach—not just focusing on specific foods or supplements, but looking at your lifestyle, daily habits, and overall health markers. Some key strategies include:

  • Nutrition –Eating anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense foods.

  • Targeted supplementation –Based on blood work and personal needs (more on that here)

  • Movement –Regular exercise to support metabolic health.

  • Reducing exposure to environmental contaminants –Choosing cleaner personal care and household products.

  • Managing stress –Prioritizing sleep, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation.
