HOW TO STAY CANCER-FREE: Tackling Cancer Stem Cells

Today, I’m diving deep into the world of cancer stem cells (CSCs), the elusive culprits believed to be responsible for cancer’s resilience, recurrence, and relentless progression. This is vital information for anyone looking to understand and tackle cancer from a naturopathic perspective and to keep it from ever coming back.

Understanding Cancer Stem Cells

So, what exactly are cancer stem cells? These are a subpopulation of cells within a tumor that possess the unique ability to survive treatment, lie dormant, and re-emerge when conditions are just right. These CSCs are rare but powerful, playing a critical role in the initiation, progression, spread, and recurrence of cancer.

Unlike other cancer cells, CSCs can adapt, grow, and change, making them incredibly difficult to eradicate. Traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation may wipe out the bulk of the tumor cells, but CSCs are thought to sometimes evade these treatments, biding their time until they can regroup and grow again as a recurrence.

One of the most insidious characteristics of CSCs is their ability to become dormant after treatment. They hide out, waiting for the perfect environment to wake up and start forming new tumors. This dormancy period is one of the key reasons for cancer recurrence, making it crucial to understand and address CSCs in our fight against cancer.

The CSCs await in dormancy for the right environment to encourage them to wake up and thrive.

Identifying and Targeting CSCs

Researchers have discovered specific cell markers that distinguish CSCs from normal cells. These markers vary across different types of cancer and have significant potential for improving cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. By identifying these markers, we can develop targeted therapies that specifically address CSCs and reduce the risk of the cells leading to a cancer recurrence. Unfortunately, this type of testing is still in the research stages, and we don't have the ability to truly test for cancer stem cells in a clinical setting just yet (but it's promising for the near future!).

I just want to take a second to distinguish between circulating tumor cell (CTC) testing and cancer stem cell (CSC) testing. I find these two often get mixed up and are thought to be the same thing. However, CTC testing is testing for tumor DNA, and this is DNA from the tumor cells in general, and can be a combination of regular cancer cells and CSCs. CTC testing is more readily available via companies like Natera (the Signatera test) and others. We commonly recommend that our clients in The Roadmap To Recovery contact their oncologist to discuss Signatera testing as it is a good additional way to monitor for tumor growth and recurrence.

Tackling CSCs

When it comes to preventing cancer recurrence, our primary goals are to:

  1. Keep CSCs dormant.

  2. Prevent their multiplication or kill them whenever possible.

  3. Encourage their differentiation into less harmful cells.

The best strategy to tackle CSCs involves creating an environment in the body that discourages their activity. Here’s how we do it:

  • Prevent the Wake-Up Call: Create an anti-inflammatory environment by removing cancer’s favorite fuels like growth factors, pro-inflammatory factors (saturated fats, oxidation, excess sugar, harmful chemicals), cytokine signals, and hormones.

  • Kill the CSCs: Use supplements such as EGCG, melatonin, curcumin, berberine, resveratrol, vitamin D, and PSP from turkey tail extracts. There are also drugs like salinomycin that can possibly target CSCs.

  • Encourage Differentiation: Though options are limited, retinoic acid (a form of vitamin A) shows promise. However, it’s complicated due to potential skin cancer risks with sunlight exposure and the variable impact of vitamin A supplements.

During treatment, natural products like berberine, curcumin (with caution due to potential drug interactions), and resveratrol can help weaken CSCs while conventional treatments target the non-CSCs. It’s all about a comprehensive approach that tackles cancer on multiple fronts.

Creating a Cancer-Unfriendly Environment

Overall, how do we work to create this environment that will not allow cancer stem cells to wake up and encourage them to die as they’re sleeping?

1) Gather your data to highlight areas of concern: blood work + epigenetic nutritional testing
2) Create a CSC unfriendly environment, such things like…

  • Reduce intake of processed foods and saturated fats that

  • Increase antioxidants in the diet (turmeric, leafy greens, fruits, veg)

  • Reduce insulin and blood sugar with blood sugar-balanced meals

  • Exercise

  • Take appropriate supplements that may kill cancer stem cells,

  • Optimize vitamins

  • Reduce excess hormones from being recirculated via proper detoxification and bowel movements

  • Improve detox pathways and limit exposure to contaminants so as to discourage inflammation from forming

By taking these steps, we can create a body environment that not only keeps CSCs at bay but also promotes overall health and wellness.
